Original Yarn Paintings by Eligio Carrillo

Eligio Carrillo was a Wixárika mara-akame (shaman) who dedicated his life to his village and his people. His visionary yarn paintings, each a nierika or sacred doorway, have touched thousands of people around the world. Eligio passed away in December 2023, and his vision lives on through the art he shared with the world.

Display and care

The yarn holds its color very well, even after years on display. Keep your painting out of direct sunlight, since heat can soften the beeswax. Indirect light is fine, and mounting above a fireplace mantle is generally okay. You may choose to frame it behind UV-protective glass; otherwise, dust the face gently with a duster or a damp paper towel.

Dimensions and weight are listed on each painting's page.

Each purchase supports the cultural heritage of the Wixárika tribe, and helps sustain their ancient spiritual traditions inherently tied to the native art forms
