Huichol Yarn Painting. Handmade indigenous artwork from the Wixárika (Huichol Tribe)
Description by artist Eligio Carrillo:
The reflection of the deer can be deceiving, as though two deer may appear, they are truly one and the same...just as the deer is also a reflection of our own self. We are the deer spirit. This is the nierika (doorway) through which we travel to purify our body, heart, and spirit in preparation for using the peyote. Once a year, we journey to this sacred place, with the Mara-Akame (Shaman) guiding the blessings and prays, accompanied by the offerings made to ask for a safe journey. The spirits of this sacred place receive those who make the journey and give the gift of vision in return.
